极右翼政党“德国选择党”（AfD）在萨克森-安哈尔特州议会选举中取得了重大胜利。该党获得了近44%的选票。传统政党基民盟（CDU）则失去了超过一半的支持者。
许多选民之所以选择德国选择党，是因为他们对联邦政府感到不满，并对移民和经济等问题感到担忧。德国选择党目前在州议会中拥有39个席位，距离绝对多数仅差3个席位。
其他政党通常因其极端理念而不愿与德国选择党合作，但不依靠德国选择党组建一个稳定的政府将非常困难。
