一项新研究显示，自1979年以来，格陵兰岛和南极洲共损失了12.5万亿吨冰。这种大规模的冰川融化导致全球海平面上升了约3.2厘米。

科学家利用卫星数据追踪了四十年来冰盖的变化。他们发现，20世纪70年代和80年代冰盖状态稳定，但1990年后融化速度大幅加快。海水变暖是造成这种破坏的主要原因，它从冰川底部融化冰层。 科学家解释说，海平面每上升1厘米，就会有200万至300万人面临危险洪水的威胁。

尽管2020年至2023年间冰川消融速度略有放缓，但专家警告称，这仅是短期天气现象，长期趋势依然非常危险。
